Step 5: List expectations for that universal.
For Jennifer, in order to attract the attention of the opposite sex, some things she might do are: try to be very inquisitive about the male, try to be talkative in order to start a conversation that might lead to a feeling of mutual closeness, primp in order to look as attractive as possible, lean in towards the male in order to be physically close to him.
For Ramadane, the ways in which he might try to attract the attention of the opposite sex are: to smile at the female, to talk to the female, to try to be physically closer to the female, to bring gifts to the female, to say nice things to the female. Note – In Ramadane’s country, Chad, it is uncommon to see someone smile on a regular basis, so when a smile does occur between two people it is noticed significantly and given a great deal of importance.
Step 6: Find the personal meaning for when expectations are met.
For both Jennifer and Ramadane, the same outcome occurs when their expectations of flirting are met. For both, the ideal end result is an attraction between two people that is understood and reciprocated.
Step 7: Have a conversation between participants.
For Jennifer, the clarifying moment was when she spoke to Melina, who ironed out some of the confusions she was having with Ramadane’s intentions on the study date. Once she understood all this, she took the time to speak with Ramadane and clarify the entire situation. Once this was done, both participants understood each other’s intentions, and instead of walking away with bad feelings about one another (Jennifer: Ramadane is too forward. Maybe that is how they have to be in Chad! or Ramadane: Jennifer is a confusing American!) they walked away with a better understanding of each other, and maybe the beginning of a friendship.
